The Cultural Politics of Human Rights in the Opera Sector in England

My project aims to generate a substantive empirical research basis for considering the correlationbetween a rights-based approach to public engagement in the opera sector (whether or not it isarticulated as such) and organisations' relative success in engaging diverse groups in contemporarysociety, particularly in relation to ethnicity and socio-economic background. The project adopts aninterdisciplinary framework drawing on theories and methodologies in human rights scholarship,sociology and linguistics. I deploy "public engagement" broadly as any interface between an organisationand the public, including artistic programming, work generated through learning & participationprogrammes and digital content, and build on Barrett's notion of "the whole theatregoing event" (2016).
