My proposed thesis is a study of how D. H. Lawrence engaged with a climate of censorship which resulted in much of his work being edited, bowdlerised, and prosecuted across his career. My research will explore how he adapted to this hostile environment through a variety of means, including the adroit use of private publication, and various instances of self-censorship. However, my research will also consider the ways in which this censorship pushed Lawrence to develop as a writer and become more controversial and outspoken in the process of circumventing what he termed the 'censor-moron'.
