An analysis of pop music alter-egos through the lens of non-binary gender scholarship

In this PhD I wish to look at alter egos used in popular music performance through the lens ofnon-binary gender scholarship. While non-binary and genderqueer issues have been exploredin disciplines such as psychology [Joel 2013], gender studies [Shapiro 2007, Gilbert 2009, Nicolas2019], and law [Meerkamper 2013], there has been little to no musicology that analyses musicalperformance with a focus on and understanding of gender spectrum and variance. Throughanalysis of critical theory and recorded texts, I will analyse the performance alter egos ofpopular music artists to advance understanding of the performance of gender as well asdeveloping frameworks toward a more genderfluid and non-binary musicology.
