One of the most prevalent issues experienced by lower-limb prosthetic users is discomfort. Heat and perspiration within the prosthetic socket is one of the main contributing factors, identified by users. Thermal discomfort can comprise of excessive heat experienced surrounding the residual limb, which will often induce excessive sweating. As a consequence, patients can experience skin irritation, loss of function and a reduction in prosthetic usage.Potential areas of research:- To measure the effects of internal temperature and its relation to thermal discomfort and other contributing factors.- To compare the internal temperature to residual limb skin sweat rate when thermal discomfort is experienced.- To compare localised residual limb skin temperature to tympanic temperature.- To measure the skin wetness of the residual limb skin with the knowledge of 25% skin wetness indicating.Carrying out research into these areas could potentially allow for a more comprehensive review of the validation of permeable prosthetic liner usage in order combat thermal discomfort.
