The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) for transport combined with a cleaner electrical grid will substantially reduce carbon emissions. Given that we are in a race against time, it is imperative that every consideration is made in regard to how to accelerate this process. Governments have shown a willingness to make EVs competitive on price through various forms of subsidy. The next most significant barrier is the lack of charging infrastructure. This is a facility location problem that seeks to maximise EV adoption rates with a range of constraints that govern what level of charging availability consumers need to feel comfortable in opting for an EV. This PhD project will develop new ways to model the dynamics for EV adoption and theimpacts of charging infrastructure on the country's electricity grid.
