There is an urgent need for novel photocathode materials for 4th generation light sources. These consist of very high quantum efficiency and low emmitance cathodes that are used to injecting electrons into a free electron lazer cavity. A combination of mesoscale modelling and photoemission prediction (from hybrid-DFT, TD-DFT and GW as appropriate) will be used to characterise the emmited spectrum from complex material surfaces and coatings. The resultant structure-property relationships will be used within a large international collaboration to generate next generation light sources for materials characteriation.
