'Beauty will save the world': The beauty of being and Christological anthropology in Ferdinand Ulrich's Homo

I propose a theological anthropology through an exploration of the resonance between metaphysical accounts of beauty and Ferdinand Ulrich's Homo Abyssus (1961), a seminal text gravely neglected in Anglophone scholarship. I propose Ulrich's thought suggests an 'ontology of beauty' which is significantly fruitful in relation to theology, philosophy, anthropology, and their various connections. I will explore the hypothesis that 'beauty' is a crucial epistemological category for human reason and its fulfilment in Christian theology, and, furthermore, that the human vocation is a contemplative response to the beauty that defines truly human living and calls from the heart of all beings.
