Using the digitized recordings of the Tape Recorded Survey of Hiberno English speech, this project will create an open access resource for digitally mapping and discovering Northern Irish English. The project will develop systematic and theoretically informed interactive resources for academic use, public engagement, heritage sustainability and professional development. The project will promote, preserve and future proof the TRSHES, bringing it and Northern Irish English to public prominence. The project is carried out in collaboration with the National Museums of Northern Ireland, as they hold the physical data pertaining to the TRSHES and they completed the digitization of all the original recordings. The project will be carried out in part via creative practice (the creation of a database and associated interactive website) and in part qualitative analysis of linguistic features discovered in the aforementioned database. Currently the 594 recordings from the TRSHES are only accessible in the original format : hours long files. This project will make the recordings accessible and comparable in a searchable database. It will also involve modern fieldwork in the form of locating and re-interviewing speakers from the original study.
