Several recent jet engine power loss events have been linked to the ingestion of small high-altitude ice crystals which build up on engine elements. These deposits disrupt airflow and cause a performance loss and cause severe damage if they become large prior to breaking off. Previous incidents have led to the release of new certification requirements which places the onus in industry to design new ice-resilient engines.This project is both numerical and experimental and aims to further characterise ice accretion and in particular the ice shedding process, filling scientific and industrial knowledge gaps. It will introduce a robust physics-based shedding model into a computer simulation suite for engine icing. To validate this model an experimental campaign with engine representative geometries will be conducted - the extent of ice accretion prior to shedding and sensitivity to engine architecture is currently poorly understood and rarely measured. This tool will allow industry to predict the build-up locations of ice better and enable the design of future engines where ice deposition is well controlled.
