The incorporation of a power gearbox into large civil turbofan engines results in a large increase in the heat that must be dissipated by the engine's thermal management system. A significant portion of this is likely to be rejected to the bypass air via heat exchanger. This research project aims to use computational techniques to improve the understanding of the thermal/aerodynamic impacts of these heat exchangers, such as:-The effect upon bypass thrust performance of rejecting heat to the bypass flow-The heat transfer performance resulting from the detailed flow within the heat exchanger itself-The aerodynamic interaction between the heat exchanger and the surrounding components of the bypass ductThe domain of interest includes features of both meter scale (bypass duct) and sub-millimetre scale (HX matrix) of importance. Adequate resolution of such using "conventional" CFD packages would require huge mesh dimensions, resulting in a computational cost which is infeasible in a design environment. As such, novel/specialised computational techniques are to be developed such that new heat exchanger geometries/integrations can be economically simulated. Such methods are to be validated against established experimental data
