Does community-based conservation make communities more resilient to disasters?

My PhD research will investigate whether community-based conservation (CBC) makes communitiesmore resilient to disasters, using a case study of CBC in northern Kenya. Specifically, I will examinethe interactions of community conservancies with pastoralist communities during three overlappingdisasters affecting northern Kenya between 2019 and 2021, including the COVID-19 pandemic, anongoing desert locust infestation and several severe floods. This question is both timely andimportant given that CBC is being promoted as a key pathway to achieving global biodiversity goalsin an era of mass extinction, yet how community conservancies intersect with communities' abilityto cope during, and recover following, periods of crisis and disaster remains understudied
