E-Government for All?: The role of technology relating to the processes and mediation of diverse citizen-state interaction

The project is researching the history of digital transformation within the UK government from the 1990s onwards. The project focuses on how changes in technologies and infrastructures may have affected ways of governing and how these were experienced by citizens. In its first phase the project uses newly released archival documents (The National Archives) from the New Labour administration. The project context is the growing focus in the 1990s on Open Government and e-Government, including electronic records management initiatives (with the creation under the Blair administration of the Office of the e-Envoy and the publication of the Modernising Government Agenda), all with a view towards connecting citizens to Government and rebalancing power. The project takes an interdisciplinary approach to study infrastructural changes as well as citizen interaction with and perception of Government.
