3D textile preforms are being used increasingly in the aerospace industry to provide enhanced properties and improve manufacturing time for composite components. With careful design, net-shaped preforms can be made which allow components such as fan blades to be constructed in one piece. These net-shaped components often have complex geometries which, in a 3D woven part, will necessitate the use of either varying weave patterns or one pattern which is gradually scaled to suit. These patterns do not necessarily scale in a straightforward manner and behaviour during compaction will change as the design is scaled. The inability to incorporate the effects of these changes in dimension into the design process is a major limitation which has been identified by manufacturers such as Rolls-Royce. This project will develop novel methods for modelling these complex components building functionality into the in-house geometric textile modelling software, TexGen (http://texgen.sourceforge.net).
