The transition of India from colonial to nation-state began with its independence in 1947, giving rise to democratic India and ending the nationalist movement, which superseded all other movements in colonial India. With the emergence of the 'state', various other movements have existed since colonial times, aside from the nationalist movement taking up new forms. An instance of this is the anti-caste movement.
