The Bio-Digital Garden Game:A feminist investigation of designing an ecocentric game, turning competition into collaboration to achieve environmental stewardshipHow can a gamified interaction with a Bio-Digital Garden promote collaboration and environmental stewardship? What range of attitudes towards other-than-humans would a bio-digital feedback loop game elicit from participants? This research investigates how a hybrid of tacit ecological knowledge with computational interaction can mediate the alienation from natural ecosystems and reveal the relationship between society and ecology. I will invite groups of urban citizens to engage in a game of feedback loops between digital elements and living moss, an interactive plant that responds to its environment in real-time. Participants would need to collaborate to stabilise the moss garden's microclimate and waive their chance to win as individuals. Using a feminist, ecocentric approach, I will design the bio-digital garden as a case study for a human-nonhuman collaborative game. It will create an impact by proposing a new tool to engage the public with environmental stewardship, informing policymakers and institutions and empowering participants with information through play.
