Performing Pain: The Benefits of Applied Theatre Intervention in the Management of Chronic Pain

This practice as research PhD will explore the benefits of using applied theatre practice as a way to target the psychosocial aspects of chronic pain. Chronic pain is a debilitating condition affecting up 50%of the UK, however access to conventional therapies are limited with many individuals unable to access treatment. Building on the already proved efficacy of applied theatre in a health and wellbeing setting this research will work towards the development of a new knowledge in both applied theatre and chronic pain research. Positioning the participant at the centre of chronic pain narratives, this research will explore the common narratives associated with chronic pain and how they impact the personal perceptions of individuals with chronic pain. The culmination of the research will be the production of a new knowledge in the field of applied theatre and a creative portfolio exploring the themes of chronic pain.
