Rockfalls pose considerable social and economic risk to those who live in mountainous regions. Existing rockfall monitoring methods, although accurate, can be considerably costly and complex. This limits the spatial and temporal resolution of monitoring rockfalls in at-risk areas. Continuous monitoring of rock walls is needed to mitigate the risks associated with rockfalls by providing early warning systems and risk assessment. Comprehensive monitoring can also help constrain the mechanisms that lead to rock slope failure and help the prediction of these events. This project seeks to develop a new, low-cost, monitoring system by exploiting the colours of rockfall scars using multi-spectral imagery and Raspberry Pi cameras. The system will be tested in the UK before placing in-situ in a suitable area for autonomous and continuous monitoring. By combining the collected data with applied image processing techniques, this system has the potential to be an effective and accessible rockfall monitoring method which can help to mitigate risk in vulnerable areas.
