Interrogative "inversion": syntax and semantics at the interface

In many languages, the interrogative interpretation is triggered by a process commonly referred to with the labelinterrogative inversion, that is, an upward movement of the inflected verb past another element bearing subject features,which can result in the inverted linear position of the two elements. Nevertheless, this label is not adequate, as thisprocess does not occur only in main interrogative sentences. In many of the varieties which possess it, inversion can beassociated with several interpretations, and the interrogative one is only one of them. The aim of the research I amproposing is to find out how languages (Romance varieties, in particular) trigger those interpretations, to what extentsubject-verb inversion results grammatical and what other ways languages have to convey those readings. "Inversion" isnot uniformly acceptable across Romance varieties, as depending on the language it interacts with different parametricchoices. Precisely for the transversal nature of this phenomenon, this study can prove useful to cast light on other lively-debated issues, such as clausal-typing, the structure of the CP layer. the encoding of indexicality, the status of subjectclitics and, as some restrictions in Northern Italian dialects can show, the structure of copular sentences.
