Ratio finiendi: The Finality of the Holy Spirit in the Theology of St. Bonaventure

This research project focuses on the thought of Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, perhaps the most important medieval Franciscan theologian and philosopher. In particular, the goal is to explicate his theology of the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Trinity. Past studies have rightfully emphasized the trinitarian structure of his thought, as well as his christocentrism. The role and place of the Spirit, however, within this trinitarian and christocentric vision has not been clearly defined. This project aims to fill this significant gap. It will examine in detail his pneumatology and will thus provide a new systematic treatment of his theology.
