Indigenous Peoples, archaeologists, and landscapes: evaluating the use of co-collaborative digital mapping to record Indigenous environments and archa

European colonialism resulted in the loss of Indigenous land, and knowledge, and the appropriation and commodification of heritage and culture. The recording and management of Indigenous archaeological and cultural landscapes is rooted in European imperial and colonial process of map making and delineation of landscapes. Community-directed recording using novel mapping methodologies can articulate a more nuanced view of cultural landscapes, centred around Indigenous holistic perceptions of landscape, protect Indigenous environments, accurately record archaeology, and better support Indigenous people and their ways of knowing to engage with the management of archaeological sites.
