Understanding the risks associated with contaminated floodwater from urban drainage systems

This studentship will collect experimental data to better understand the factors that control the level of resilience of urban drainage systems during heavy rainfall events. Specifically, the project will focus on developing a better understanding of the risks associated with contaminated floodwater to public health. Experimental work will utilise unique large scale experimental facilities at Sheffield to study time varying hydraulic and contaminant transport processes when urban drainage systems fail. This will include measuring interactions between piped drainage and surface flood flows and the release and transport of contaminated materials. This will involve the use of novel instrumentation in a laboratory environment.
