英文摘要
With the centenary of insulin's discovery shortly passed, this research intends to uncover its influence upon the patient experience of diabetics in Scotland by focussing on patient-agency and patient-consumerism. These concepts have been well discussed within the wider historiography of medical history; however, due to the unique transformations that insulin inflicted upon the condition and its treatment, diabetes can offer new insights. With diabetes becoming a managed disease, exploring it in the context of 20th century Scottish society will provide new insights into lifestyle and its influence upon patient identity and experience. Furthermore, it offers the potential to explore broader differences in the development of medical treatment and public health of chronic disease between Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom.
