Monetising homophobic discourse: hate speech, derogatory language, and the hetero-masculine male body on OnlyFans.

Since the creation of the OnlyFans platform in 2016, there hasbeen an emergence of male-identifying content creatorsmonetising hate speech and derogatory language tocommodify the body for gay and queer consumption. Throughthe performance of hetero-masculinity and use ofhomophobia, the male body can dismiss homosexualbehaviours and maintain an 'authentic' heterosexuality.Previous research into the performance of hetero-masculinityconcludes that offline spaces permit male-on-male sexualinteractions without using homophobic discourse to (re)assertheterosexuality. However, there is an absence of researchexploring how the monetisation of hate speech and heteromasculinityinterplay to negotiate the tensions and exchangesaligned to male-on-male online sexual encounters. The studywill conduct 20 oral history testimonies with male-identifyingOnlyFans creators to qualitatively understand how therelationship between hate speech, derogatory language andhetero-masculinity becomes capitalised to provoke arousal forgay and queer consumers and gain economic capital. Also,critical discourse analysis of 1,000 posts from OnlyFansprofiles, X-Rated Twitter sites and profile advertisements willbe completed to evaluate how sexually explicit material andhomophobic discourse (re)assert heterosexual desires and an'authentic' heterosexuality online. Findings from the oralhistory and discourse analysis will be compared to understandhow male content creators remodel heterosexual desires forqueer consumption both online and offline. The hetero-bodyand homophobic discourse become fetishized and exchangedas a queer commodity when OnlyFans operates as a site forthe remodelling of heterosexual desires. Future researchcould explore the motives of gay male and queer-identifyingOnlyFans users who subscribe to hetero-masculine creators.
