Order-disorder control in functional oxides

Overview: The exploitable properties of many functional materials (e.g. their electronic, magnetic or dielectric properties) are intimately linked to their atomic structure. This project will investigate a variety of metal oxide systems where control of atomic order-disorder transitions can be used to tune properties. The project will involve the synthesis of both known and novel polycrystalline and single-crystal samples, and the measurement of their physical properties (conductivity, magnetism, heat capacity, etc). The correlation of structure with properties will be probed using a combination of Bragg crystallography (powders and single crystals), total scattering or PDF measurements (polycrystalline samples) and single crystal diffuse scattering studies.
