英文摘要
This project explores the material, social and cultural identities of elite transnational families resident in England and France (c.1870-1930). At the turn of the twentieth century, the nouveaux riches had emerged as a cosmopolitan elite characterised by the acquisition and assimilation of the economic and cultural capital associated with the nobility. By studying a dozen transnational families from this new bourgeoisie, and the various actors who contributed to shaping their houses, interiors and collections, this project explores the cultural and stylistic values that underpinned their new supranational identity and analyses how this new plutocracy reinvented patterns of taste and luxury.
