英文摘要
One of the greatest puzzles in life is understanding its very existence; the intricate combination of planetary building blocks that ultimately resulted in the origin of life itself. But in order to see the big picture, we must investigate the individual puzzle pieces. Carbonaceous material in the outer Solar System comprises one piece of the puzzle. Thought to be the main carriers of water and volatiles to the inner Solar System, studying carbonaceous asteroidal material provides a unique perspective on the precursor materials and mechanisms that built the terrestrial planets. Therefore, this project offered by the School of Physical Sciences at the Open Universityinvestigating hydrothermal alteration of carbonaceous materials through experimental petrology seems an excellent fit for my interests and abilities. I also believe that there is already a good foundation for a robust working relationship with the project supervisors, and a familiarity with my work ethic as Dr Martin Suttle is currently cosupervising my Master's project.
