As urban industrialisation continues at exponential rates across the modern world, it is timelier than ever to analyse this cultural phenomenon through the interdisciplinary and holistic lens of bioarchaeology, applying humanistic perspectives across time and space. Through novel sulphur isotopic analysis, this project will develop an original means to reconstruct and investigate the challenges faced by diverse populations in (pre-)Industrial England, specifically: pollution and socio-environmental injustices, disease and health inequities, and migration. In doing so, this research will ultimately contribute a distinct perspective on the evolution and development of individual identities, biocultural adaptations, and sociocultural structures unique to urban-industrial sites.
