Can Chinese Firms Break Free from the US Hi-Tech Blockade? Investigating the New Era of Techno-Nationalist Globalization

We seem to be at the dawn of a new era of what some call"techno-nationalist globalization" in which the nationalownership of advanced technology has become a keysecurity issue in geopolitical rivalry, which is mainlyreflected recently in the US decoupling of China. Thisresearch proposes to investigate these still-freshtransformations from the perspective of Chinese high-techfirms now under attack from the world's hegemon, most ofHuawei but also Tik Tok, ZTE, DJI and Hikvision.This research will contribute to contemporary debates onthe future of world order, the changing globalization andstructural power, a resurgence of state capitalism versusneoliberalism, and what some consider to be a burgeoningCold War II. Most scholars in these debates are based in theWest and there is a shortage of perspectives from China,including Chinese firms at the receiving end of this US-ledblockade. This research intends to fill this gap byinvestigating Chinese data, especially through interviewswith the Chinese hi-tech firms themselves. Hence, thisresearch will not only address core academic debates butalso intends to be policy-relevant not just for China but allemerging markets attempting to navigate this new techno-nationalist era.
