The UK is committed to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The transport sector is a significant part of it, and this has led to the emergence of electrification of power trains in automotive and/or aviation. With transport sector specifically, the hurdles of large format battery packs are similar, cost, durability, and safety. The main focus of this project will be on the safety side of a large format battery pack. There is a lack of understanding regarding the physics behind thermal runaway models and the actual reactions that happen during a battery failure. Therefore, in most cases the data/model from one cell won't be transferable to another. The aim of this project is to bridge the gaps in the literature firstly by developing physics-based models of the thermal runaway and quantifying the heat and released gas. Furthermore, using the validated models to mitigate thermal runaway/thermal propagation in case of a failure, and finding solutions to avoid battery pack explosion.
