Be+ ions can be trapped in Penning traps and laser-cooled to very low temperatures.This project aims to use such laser-cooled ions as a tool for antimatter research in two differentways : a) We will use laser-cooled Be+ ions to sympathetically cool positrons used for antihydrogen synthesis and thereby improve the number of cold trappable antihydrogen that can be trapped. We'll use the detailed control provided by laser-cooling to explore ways to better understand the synthesis process and improve it. b) Antihydrogen measurements have reached a level where detailed knowledge of the in-situ magnetic fields are becoming critical. Laser-cooled Be+ can be excited through either microwaves or Raman transitions and used as an in situ magnetometer. The student will develop this methodology and bench mark it to existing ones and improve on current capabilities for improved precision measurements on antihydrogen.
