Places of Protest: A Study of Rebellious Public Spaces

This research investigates the physical and material manifestation of dissent in the built environment. Through three case studies of protests by women conducted in 3 different times and places, the research critically interrogates how the actions of dissent disrupt and undermine gender hierarchy encoded in the built environment. It aims to advance the study of design as an enabler of political action that can help create more inclusive spaces in cities. Additionally, it will establish dissent as a placemaking exercise to highlight how protest overturns and repurposes spaces that are meant to keep women 'in their place'.
