China is Burning: Fashion, Bodies, and Gender in Chinese Ballrooms

With the development of drag fashion and more open-minded views on gender, there are more and moreunderground ballrooms in China. Previous studies, whether on queer studies, western drag fashion, or Chinesetraditional cross-dressing performances, have failed to explain the emerging drag fashion in contemporaryChina. In order to sort out the forms, characteristics, and impacts of major Chinese drags and ballrooms inrecent years, and explore the gender construction, body discipline, and resistance, I will use grounded theoryto conduct this study, combined with multiple ethnographies, in-depth interviews, multimodality discourseanalysis, and semiotics analysis.
