The aim for my project is to understand both the mechanisms and parameters behind the cut edge corrosion & corrosion resistance of new grade galvanised steel substrates under varied intense conditions, typically of C4/C5 grade exposure environments with variations such as moisture, pH, and salt content. The reasonings behind this are to combat the ever-growing need for sustainability in our modern world as it becomes ever more necessary to increase the lifetime of the materials produced to both save material costs and reduce the need for the mass production of new replacement materials. Primary aspects we will aim to analyse are as follows; Investigating how the different and new types of galvanizing alloys corrode at cut edges with and without protective organic coatings, how different coating formulations such as binding chemistry can influence cut-edge corrosion, What different severity environmental parameters influence the cut-edge corrosion of different types of galvanized steel. And finally, How to improve the inhibition of cut-edge corrosion by a protective organic coating.
