This project brings together trends in sociolinguistics and decolonial studies that have been garnering attention respectively in francophone studies - the promulgation of the French language - and contemporary Franco-Lebanese relations. It focuses on the (post/)colonial role of France as an agent of language policy (LP) in Lebanon, analysing LP through three key events: the Maronite-Druze conflict (1860), the French Mandate (1920-43), and the post-Civil War period (1990-). By engaging with examples from Macron's presidency, this project demonstrates the significance and urgency of applying approaches from both fields to the case of Lebanon.
