This project is concerned with the release and dispersion of buoyant sources (gases that are either lighter-than-air or heavier-than-air) in urban environments. Buoyant sources can include hazardous gases, released because of accidents or maliciously on purpose, and thermally hot releases (e.g. from fire). The research will be mainly experimental and will involve the use of the EnFlo boundary-layer wind tunnel, a NERC/NCAS and EPSRC/NWTF national facility able to simulate either neutral or non-neutral atmospheric flows. The aim is to use the knowledge gained to develop, or improve, the models describing these phenomena.
