Confronting History: the edited correspondence of Jean Paulhan and Armand Petitjean, 1934-1968

This project will result in an edition of letters exchanged between Jean Paulhan, editor of the Nouvelle Revue fran9aise (NRF), and Armand Petitjean (1913-2003), a talented but neglected critic. The correspondence affords a unique insight into the preoccupations of intellectuals during this sensitive period in French history. By common consent the NRF is France's most important 20th-century literary-cultural review. Because it reflected and commented on political events, it rapidly attained institutional status. Despising defeatism, Petitjean defended republican principles and opposed appeasement policies. Under the Occupation, however, he was compromised, yet Paulhan defended him in the post-Liberation purges.
