This project intends an investigation of Verdi'd heroines within the context of nineteenth-century operatic performance and reception. Its purpose is to clarify the impact of ideas of gender on the composition and performance of female operatic roles: particularly with regard to operatic conventions (musical and dramatic) and the social, cultural and political context that determined critical reception.
