Given the heightened religios tension of the early modern period, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the formal relgious education given to those sons of the gentry and middling ranks who in increasing numbers attended English grammar schools and universities. What part did Christian humanism play in this education? How far does the combination of humanism and Protestantism help explain why these students became, as adults, the kind of Protestants they did - idiosyncratic by European standards, and even by official Anglican ones?
