Rabble-Rousers: Militant Segregationists in the Post-War American South

This project assesses the political careers of three right-wing militants who opposed the implementation of racial integration in the American South. Scholars usually portray political extremist as being both socially marginalised and mentally ill. The project challenges that pathological model. Firstly, it provides a more complicated explanation of the motivations, that drove right-wing extremist by assessing the formative influences that shaped them. Secondly, it analysis their political philosophies, as a means to determine why they are attracted, widespread popular support. The achievements of civil rights movements can only be accurately measured, through an understanding of the enemy that it faced.
