MRI ASSESSMENT OF LUNG PERFUSION AFTER RADIATION

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. A goal of this study is to detect changes in lung perfusion and possibly proton density in lungs after ionizing radiation. We will compare blood perfusion and leakage of vascular endothelium in control and irradiated rat lungs (whole lung, single dose irradiation) using tail vein infusion of magnavist. A comparison of perfusion/blood volume between irradiated and control lungs will be determined by signal difference between right and left lungs. A sequence of images over a determined time period will be used to analyze leakage and build up of contrast agent. Proton density difference between irradiated and un-irradiated lungs may also be calculated. Animals will eventually be imaged at 10 different timepoints after irradiation, with three to four animals imaged at each timepoint. The first step in the study will be to pick out three to four timepoints after irradiation to determine effectiveness of the imaging protocol and make adjustments as needed. Appropriate imaging techniques and sequences to be used will be discussed further.
