SALIENCE OR GAIN? COMPARING ACCOUNTS OF NUCLEUS ACCUMBENS FUNCTION

According to distinct hypotheses about the role of the ventral striatum in incentive processing, nucleus accumbens activation represents either anticipated gain (Knutson et al., 2001; Schultz, 2004) or general salience (Berridge & Robinson, 1998; Zink et al., 2004). In order to compare these accounts, we scanned participants with event-related fMRI as they performed a modified monetary incentive delay (MID) task (Knutson et al., 2001). The MID task included gain, neutral, and loss outcomes, some of which were probabilistic and some of which were guaranteed. We also probed self-reported arousal and valence during anticipation as participants played the task.
