HF ACTION FOR HEART FAILURE AND A CONTROLLED TRIAL INVESTIGATING OUTCOMES

The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Over 4.7 million Americans suffer from heart failure (HF) with 400,000 new cases each year. Although more people are surviving a heart attack, many later develop HF. Unfortunately, mortality from HF continues to increase and more Medicare dollars are spent on HF than heart attacks and cancer therapy combined. This disease has a tremendous impact on quality of life, which can be caused by exercise intolerance. As the disease progresses, patients become more debilitated. Over the years many studies have examined the mechanisms responsible for exercise intolerance in HF patients. The need to discover the correlation between EF and exercise intolerance has lead investigators to search for an explanation for the cause of fatigue observed in HF patients. The HF-ACTION is designed to test the primary hypothesis that patients with HF with a New York Heart Classification of II-IV, who are given an exercise training program in addition to usual care, will have a 20% lower rate of death and hospitalization over 2 years than those who receive usual care alone. This study will include 3,000 subjects who will be followed over 3 years; half randomized to usual care and half randomized to an exercise program.
