CONCENTRATED FEEDINGS AND URINE CONCENTRATION IN GROWING PREMATURE INFANTS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Premature infants with lung disease are felt to benefit from restricted intake volumes. In order to provide adequate nutrition despite low intake volumes, feedings are often concentrated above the standard caloric concentration (80 kcal/100 ml), i.e., to 90 or 100 kcal/100 ml. The effect of this practice on urinary osmolar concentration is not known. Premature infants have limited urinary concentrating ability and may therefore have a reduced margin of safety when receiving concentrated feedings.
