PATIENT ACTIVATION INTERVENTION TO IMPROVE CARE OF PATIENTS WITH OSTEOPOROSIS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The objective of the current study is to determine whether a patient activation consisting of mailing patients with dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan results plus educational information about osteoporosis suplemented by a follow-up telephone call can improve the care of individuals diagnosed with osteoporosis on screening DEXA scan. A randomized, single-blind control trial will be conducted to assess the impact of this intervention on three complementary measures of osteoporosis care: 1) use of antiresorptive therapy, calcium supplementation, and adoption of lifestyle modification; 2) knowledge about osteoporosis; and 3) satisfaction with osteoporosis care.
