This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. Chronic recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) in children, a common, but perplexing problem that frequently becomes irritable bowel syndrome in young adults. It appears that many cases of RAP related to carbohydrate maldigestion and development a screening non-radioactive breath test will be helpful in management of RAP. This GCRC protocol supports development of a non-radioactive starch breath test and provides the basis for a subsequent and broader National Institute of Health proposal. If successfully calibrated, the 13C-breath-test could replace the more expensive endoscopic procedures currently in use. It could bring more specificity to the diagnosis of recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) in children.
