This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to find out how ACE inhibitors lower PAI-1. We believe that ACE inhibitors may lower PAI-1 by increasing a chemical in the body called nitric oxide. For this reason, we will measure the effect of an ACE inhibitor, ramipril; a dietary supplement that increases nitric oxide, L-arginine; and an intravenous drug that decreases nitric oxide, L-NAME, on clotting factors in the blood.
