This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Outreach Core Highlights for VGN APR Equipment Support and Use of UVM facilities ¿ Microarray outreach class module was delivered to Norwich University, Castleton State College and Green Mountain College, which is outside our network ¿ Microarray outreach module is currently being carried out at Johnson State a BPI site with a Johnson State faculty member acting as the lead instructor. This means that the outreach module carried out at Johnson State College in our BRIN phase has laid a firm foundation and the instructors at Johnson State College need much less VGN support to carry out this module this second time. We anticipate that the module will become a permanent part of their curriculum with only minimal help from VGN for the microarray facility use and analysis. ¿ Reagents and equipment for the outreach footlockers were purchased and delivered to each site including all disposables and perishables. Equipment included thermal-cyclers, spectrophotometers, agarose gel apparatus, micro-pipettors, explosion proof freezers, UV tran-illuminators, as well as other common laboratory items depending on the individual institutions needs. ¿ 20 laptop computer and a wireless hub as well as specific software were purchase for supporting the bioinformatics component of microarray outreach and utilized at the BPI and non-BPI sites. ¿ The following articles describing the outreach interactions between the VGN outreach core and other institutions have been published; Burlington Free Press March 28, 2006 ID:bur8924653 (Outreach at Johnson State) Bioarray News 12/21/2005 Volume: 5 number 49 (pgs 6-8) (Microarray Outreach) Times Argus: Vermont News and Information http://www.timesargus.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051121/NEWS/511210346/0/F ONTPAGE (Outreach at Norwich University) Rutland Daily Herald 11/22/2005 ¿Federal grant brings high-tech genetics lab to Vermont colleges¿ (Outreach at Norwich University) Networking and Professional Development Highlights for VGN 4/21/06 Networking Experts List A project sponsored by VGN in collaboration with the Vermont Technology Council is the creation of a ¿Vermont Scientific Experts List¿. The primary objectives of this directory are to provide (1) an online searchable database of links to academic researchers as possible consultants/collaborators for technology-based companies, and (2) an online searchable database of instrumentation and other equipment at Vermont¿s universities and colleges that might be made available to technology-based small businesses. This directory will help to build bridges between our state¿s academic researchers and industries in order to foster scientific vitality in Vermont. The base directory is available and fine-tuning and updating the directory is continuing with coordination by Jeffrey Bond and Paul Hale. Professional Development BPI Career Day Panels The goal of the Career Day panel presentations at BPI colleges is to reach a broader audience of students and junior faculty and to present panelists that are more specific to the needs of the BPI. These panels were held in the Spring semester and were attended by 20-30 students and 5-10 faculty. The BPI coordinators assisted in choosing appropriate panelists and contributing ideas for specific panel members. The panels were informative for the students and rewarding for the panelists. Feedback from faculty and students will be put forth to improve the panel organization and content for the upcoming years.
