This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Furman University is committed to pursuing excellence and increasing capacity in biomedical research through the substantive and consistent programmatic support of its research-active faculty. Long recognized as a national leader in undergraduate research in chemistry and psychology, the University continues to bolster its capacity for research through the development of core facilities such as the addition of new and renovated life science facilities and the continued expansion of faculty positions to include emerging areas of inquiry such as bioinformatics, neuroscience and behavioral medicine. With the assistance of the NIH-INBRE program, Furman aims to increase the national prominence and competitiveness of its biomedical research programs through the targeted support of five of its most promising young investigators, faculty with a demonstrated record of achievement and the potential not only for independent NIH-AREA support, but also a research capacity consistent with an R01 mission. In addition, the INBRE initiative will allow for a permanent expansion position within the Psychology Department aimed to attract and retain a sixth nationally competitive investigator. Significant university matching commitments will provide funding for the Project Director and up to ten additional biomedical investigators actively pursuing grant submission to NIH and other agencies. In concert with its peer undergraduate institutions, closely networked by a highly successful NIH-BRIN effort, Furman will continue to contribute to the overall growth of regenerative medicine in-state through the training of highly capable undergraduates, including sixty supported through this award, with a specific and targeted outreach to underrepresented minorities. The thematic focus of Furman's research efforts will center on molecular biology and biochemistry relating to neuroscience and cancer therapy. Seven distinguished biomedical faculty will mentor Furman's targeted investigators; moreover, to provide an appropriate mechanism for systematic review and periodic assessment, an oversight committee that incorporates the talents of three highly prominent biomedical investigators has been constituted.
