As indicated in Section I, Description of the Proposed Center, this proposal to establish an Exploratory NMCHD Research Center of Excellence represents a collaborative effort by the Center for the Study of Health Disparities (CSHD) at Texas A&M University and the Center for Community Health Development (CCHD) at the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center. Each of these two centers has been approved by the Texas A&M Board of Regents as recognized centers of excellence within the Texas A&M University System. This proposal also represents a collaboration across multiple campuses of the Texas A&M University System. The Texas A&M Health Science Center and Texas A&M University are among 17 members of the Texas A&M University System including campuses at Texas A&M University in College Station, the Texas A&M Health Science Center in College Station, Prairie View A&M University, Texas A&M University-Commerce, West Texas A&M University in Canyon Texas, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M International University in Laredo, Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Several of the Texas A&M University System campuses serve predominantly minority students, including Prairie View A&M which is an historically Black college, as well as Texas A&M Kingsville and Texas A&M International which are predominantly Hispanic serving institutions. Thus, the Texas A&M University System includes campuses across the state as well as campuses that serve predominantly minority institutions. Moreover, as a land grant institution, the Texas A&M University System campuses reach out to many rural and remote communities across the state. In addition to the 9 campuses, the Texas A&M University System includes a number of state agencies, such as the Texas: Agricultural Experiment Station, Engineering Experiment Station, Forest Service, Cooperative Extension, Engineering Extension, Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, and Transportation Institute. While the proposed project represents a collaborative effort across two centers of excellence and two campuses, as indicated in the organizational chart for the proposed project (Figure III-i) the project will be administratively and physically housed in the Center for the Study of Health Disparities at Texas A&M University.
