ASSESSING THE EFFECT OF TYPE 1 INTERFERON THERAPIES FOR THE TREATMENT OF MULT

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We wish to determine how continuous interferon therapy influences the expression brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a proposed neuroprotective molecule, by peripheral blood leukocytes and how this compares the effect of Glatiramer Acetate. We will assess the relative expression of BDNF by PBL in closely matched cohorts of relapsing-remitting MS patients who have been on one of the approved interferon therapies (Avonez, Betaseron or Rebif) or on Glatiramer Acetate for at least 12 months. The results of this study may provide insight into the mode of action of the different FDA-approved MS therapies and their influences on neuroprotection.
