This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. We wish to determine how continuous interferon therapy influences the expression brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a proposed neuroprotective molecule, by peripheral blood leukocytes and how this compares the effect of Glatiramer Acetate. We will assess the relative expression of BDNF by PBL in closely matched cohorts of relapsing-remitting MS patients who have been on one of the approved interferon therapies (Avonez, Betaseron or Rebif) or on Glatiramer Acetate for at least 12 months. The results of this study may provide insight into the mode of action of the different FDA-approved MS therapies and their influences on neuroprotection.
